Text Relay is a national telephone relay service for deaf, deafened, hard of hearing, deafblind and speech-impaired people. It is managed by the Royal National Institute for Deaf People (RNID) and funded by British Telecom. It lets deaf and hard of hearing people use a textphone to access any services that are available on standard telephone systems. Text Relay provides a link between any textphone user and a hearing person. The link is a highly trained RNID Text Relay operator who provides a discreet and confidential service. If a customer is deaf, all they need is a textphone, which is a specially adapted telephone with a keyboard.
Customers who have access to a textphone will be able to dial the Customer Service Centre directly using a special prefix number. Once the call is connected, a Text Relay operator will join the line to relay the call. The customer can type or speak what they want to say to us into their textphone and this will be relayed by the Text Relay operator. The Text Relay operator will then type our reply to the customer who will receive this on their textphone.
All relay calls are strictly confidential and no records of any conversations are maintained by RNID. The price of a Text Relay phone call will be charged at the same rate of any other phone call to Guinness Northern Counties.
Our current minicom service will continue to operate via a divert to Text Relay.
